Drexciya waren James Marcel Stinson und Gerald Donald aus Detroit. Stinson hatten wir erst kürzlich mit seinem Projektnamen The Other People Place als Platte des Tages und als Nachschlag gibt’s jetzt hier das einzige Derxciya Interview, welches er jemals im Radio gegeben hat – stellvertretend für Detroit Techno und so. Heute ist hier Ambient Tag und da passt die Sendung beim Berlin Mitte Institut irgendwie echt gut dazu. Dort sind heute zwischen 19 und 23 Uhr Frank Bretschneider und Grischa Lichtenberger von Raster Noton – Archibv für Ton und Nichtton zu Gast, um dort ihren Ansatz von experimenteller Musik vorzustellen. Entgegen zur Ambient-Wikipedia-Definition von eben ist Raster Noton für mich ja eher ein Label, welches die Musik nicht ins Ambiente einfügen will sondern mit ihrem experimentellen Ansatz noch tiefer ins (Unter-) Bewusstsein vordringt. Wird bestimmt spannend:
Es kommt eine neue Schallplatte äh Doku über die Schallplatte, auch Vinyl genannt, mit dem Titel To Have & To Hold. Sie gibt es in verschiedenen Formaten – in 7″ mit großem und kleinem Loch, 10″, 12″ und in Schwarz, Bunt mit Bild. Mit und ohne Cover, mit Stempel, in Plastik gefütterter Innenhülle oder auch ganz ohne. 33 und 45 Umdrehungen pro Minute. Ich bin mir sicher, davon hat schon manch einer gehört. Dieses schon seit mindestens 20 Jahren tot gesagte Medium, welches zerkratzt, springt und nicht in mp3-Shops zu haben ist. Vinyl, das immer in Stapeln auftaucht und von welchem man schon mal ein paar Tausend bunkern kann. To Have & To Hold wird bestimmt ein ganz toller Film, denn es gibt nichts schöneres als Musik von Vinyl zu hören!
Kenny Dixon Jr., noch besser bekannt als Moodymann, ist on Tour: Nach dem klasse Set im Berghain vom Februar war Moodymann in der vergangenen Woche Gast der Red Bull Music Academy in London. Das ist doch mal ein wirklicher Hammer, denn eigentlich gibt Kenny Dixon Jr. keine Interviews. Update: Und so richtig geil ist, dass es die RBMA Lecture mit Moodymann schon in voller Länge im Videostream gibt. Die ist jetzt Pflicht für alle!

Bleep43 hat am Wochenende ein wirklich tiefgründiges Interview mit Juan Atkins (aka Cybotron, Model 500) veröffentlicht und insgesamt hat dieses Projekt über ein Jahr Zeit benötigt bis nun endlich veröffentlicht wurde. Doch was ist ein Jahr, wenn es hier über den 1962 in Detroit geborenen Juan Atkins geht? Er ist der Godfather of Techno, auf ihn geht die noch weitgehend gültige Symbiose zwischen Musik und Technologie speziell für Techno zurück, er hat als Cybotron bereits 1984 einen meiner Alltimefaves Alleys of your Mind gemacht, gab dieser neuen Musik aus Detroit mit dem prophetischen Track Techno City ihren Namen und nicht zuletzt war da dieses Future Shock Buch von Alvin Toffler. Dabei frage ich mich, warum ich dieses Buch nach inzwischen auch schon 15 Jahren Techno immer noch nicht gelesen habe? Egal, oder auch nicht. Ein sehr persönliches und ausführliches Interview – auch für müde Interviewleser. Und als Bonus gibts bei Little White Earbuds einen neuen Model 500 Track zum kostenlosen Download.
Die Lecture der Red Bull Music Academy mit Bob Moog, dem Erfinder und Entwickler der großartigen Moog Synthesizer, ist wieder online. Eine kurze Geschichtsstunde in Sachen elektronische Musik, eine Musiker-freundliche Einführung in die Funktionsweise eines Synthesizer und ein super sympathischer und inzwischen schon verstorbener Bob Moog. Essentiell!
Der Infinitestatemachine Blog ist doch immer wieder einen Klick wert. Letztens habe ich ja schon auf den tollen Gmos Mix dort hingewiesen. In der vergangenen Woche gab’s dann ein super Interview mit Simon und Guillaume, die neben ihrem Lucky Cloud Soundsystem auch das großartige Internetradio Deepfrequency.com betreiben. Endlich ein Internetradio, dass die Lücke von Garniers PPB nicht nur ausfüllt sondern noch einen drauf setzt. Die Tracks, die hier gemixt durchs Internetradio schimmern, machen dem Namen Deepfrequency alle Ehre und schnell wird klar, dass hier zwei echte Profis am Werk sind. Es sind zwei alte Party-Haudegen aus London, die schließlich über Ibiza auf David Mancusos legnedärer Loft Party landeten und seitdem diesen Vibe weitertragen. Bei Simon und Guillaume stehen Funk, Soul, Disco Klassiker locker neben deepen Techno Tracks und Deep House – ein perfekter Mix, falls der nächste Montag mal wieder bloody sein sollte. Lest selbst wie das kam mit Mancuso und Lucky Cloud, hört den Mix und checkt das Radio – lohnt sich.

Es gibt Neues von Carl Craig. Im nächsten Jahr ist er der künstlerische Leiter vom Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Das Festival steht ja ein bisschen in der Kritik, zu wenig mit den Artists der Stadt zu machen und so hat sich inzwischen manches Highlight (z.B. Omar-S auf einer Rooftop Afterhour) auf die Pre- & Afterparties verlagert. Carl Craig solls richten. Und auch sonst hat C2 viel zu tun, wie er im FACT Interview beim jüngst vergangenen Mutek Festival in Montreal berichtete.
You seem to be embarking on more live performances of late. As well as the Innerzone Orchestra gigs, you did a show with Les Siècles orchestra at Cité de la Musique in Paris. Are you glad to get out of clubs and into different performance contexts?
“I don’t know if I’d say my attitude has changed. If the right situation presents itself, I agree to it. Some things just work better in a concert hall than a club. The thing with DJing is, it’s easier to do more of it – I’m in here Canada and I’m doing three dates in one weekend…”
You’re presenting the UK debut of Innerzone Orchestra at Get Loaded In The Park this summer…
“Yeah. We did our first date in Rome in January of last year, and another one in Spain. I did a show with Francesco [Tristano], M Kelvin Sholar and a bass player. Then there’s Wendel Harrison and some more players.”
How did the Re:Constructed [Craig's collaboration with Moritz Von Oswald, in which they "reconstructed" the classical work of Ravel and others] project come about?
“Well, I’ve known for Moritz for a long, long time; I love the guy. So if he suggests something cool, we do it. Moritz has a classical background, and we’d been talking about Versus for a while, so when he asked me to get involved with this Deutsche Grammophon project, it was a no-brainer.”
Vor ein paar Tagen hab ich Euch bereits den Donato Dozzy DJ Mix aus dem Glade Podcast ans Herz gelegt. Obwohl ein gewisses Maß an Vorsicht bei Artists aus Italien sicherlich nicht schlecht ist, so gibt es doch immer wieder tolle Ausnahmen. Donato Dozzy ist definitiv einer davon, was er in den vergangenen Wochen mehrmals eindrucksvoll unterstrichen hat.
Neben dem schon genannten, großartigen Mix ist bereits im April die Aquaplano 1111 erschienen – eine 12″, ganz in weiß und gemeinsam mit Nuel produziert. Es ist eine dieser Platten, die ich zwar durch eine Eingebung gekauft habe – die dann aber erst mal im allgemeinen, unsortierten Wühlstapel verschwunden ist. Nun eröffnet sich hier plötzlich eine Welt, mit der ich mich eigentlich schon immer identifizieren konnte. Mit diesen vier wirklich überzeugenden, sphärischen Tracks zwischen Ambient und Techno-Drones macht sich diese Platte nun nahezu über Nacht auf, sich einen Platz zwischen meinen All-Time-Favoriten zu erarbeiten. Die wirklichen Perlen brauchen manchmal den richtigen Zeitpunkt und manchmal hilft auch ein Interview – zum Beispiel jenes, welches man mit Donato Dozzy bei freshgoodminimal lesen kann. How does this music go with the nature?
This music goes with the nature, that’s the point. If it depended just on me, I would have made only parties in open air. The music has to take its time. Certain sounds need to be in touch with the sky, with the stars and people need to know that. When you are inside of a club, it can be the best club in the world, but you cannot see the stars, you cannot really put the hands up of your head and just feel the touch with something. Also in some clubs there are a lot of people smoking, I do smoke too, but after 3-4 hours in a club I can not breath properly. It’s also a question of regenerating our body. When we are outside we have a different understanding of the sound, because our brain, whatever we do, it’s still clear, we are breathing good air in a perfect environment. I guess a good sound system it’s all we need.
Patrice Scott hat Resident Advisor ein Interview gegeben. Irgendwie war das überfällig, oder?
If you’ve had your eye on the new blood coming out of the Motor City’s electronic music scene over the last few years, then you’ll almost certainly have heard Patrice Scott’s name uttered more than a few times. But while fellow new faces such as Kyle Hall and Kris Wadsworth are still learning how to shave, Scott witnessed the first waves of Detroit house and techno, becoming known on the local DJ scene and holding down residencies in both his native city and just across the border in Toronto. It wasn’t until 2006, though, that he entered the world of recorded music, releasing the melodically rich deep house of the Atmospheric Emotions EP on his own Sistrum Recordings. And it’s been difficult to ignore him since.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Scott has shied away from making Sistrum Recordings a Detroit-specific imprint, picking up producers from Italy (Ksoul and Ra.H), Ireland (Leonid), Germany (XDB) and Los Angeles (Mike Edge) to further the label’s vision of deep house and techno. However, it’s Scott’s raw and emotionally charged cuts that manage to stand out from his impeccably selected roster, with tracks like “Raw Fusion” and “Motions” already becoming modern classics for Detroit aficionados worldwide. With DJ gigs all over Europe and a semi-regular slot at Fabric (including a main room set before Ricardo Villalobos and Raresh last weekend), Scott is slowly and deservedly rising through the ranks of the DJ elite.
There’s quite an emphasis on melody and musicality to your tracks. Did you ever have any musical training?
When I was younger I took some piano and guitar lessons, but I’m nowhere near a musician, so most of it I picked up along the way. My parents used to play music around the house all the time though—Marvin Gaye, Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers—stuff like that.
What was your introduction to electronic music?The first time that I was turned on to electronic music was when I was about 13 or 14, when I went to this party down in some backyard down the street from where my grandmother used to live. It was a local Detroit group who called themselves Sharevari, and the DJs at the party were a local Detroit crew called Direct Drive. That was my first real experience with… I don’t know if it was really considered electronic music back then; I think it was so-called “progressive” music. A lot of the music that they were playing—and this was around 1984—it was music with instruments and things like that, but it was still dance music. Music that was generally derivative of disco, but they called it “progressive dance music.”
From that point on, I had already wanted to be a DJ, but I was DJing more regular music. I say regular music but it was more popular music—things that were being played on the radio like Kraftwerk, Afrika Bambaataa, Soul Sonic Force and things like that. The Sharevari party definitely changed me and got me into playing a different kind of music, the more progressive style of stuff.
What really set me off was a friend who gave me some mix tapes from Chicago. His cousin would send him recordings of the shows on WGCI and WBMX. Of course, I’d be listening to Charles Johnson—The Electrifying Mojo—every night at 10 PM as well. I was DJing somewhat up until the mid ’90s, and from that point on I was in and out of the DJing game. I went to college, I was doing other things, and then in about 1997 I think, I got my hands on some equipment and I started to make tracks but I didn’t really go too far with it because I’d just started a job and I was working long hours, so it kind of kept me from going further with the production thing…
