Am Montag Abend bin ich routinemäßig mal wieder bei Red Bull Music Academy vorbei gesurft und da haben die doch tatsächlich die Jeff Mills Lecture der allerersten Red Bull Music Academy von 1998 in Berlin ausgegraben. Da war Jeff Mills gerade so richtig in Höchstform mit den ganzen Purpose Maker Releases und so! Sehenswert war das für mich nicht nur aus Nostalgiegründen, denn es geht auch um Kommunikation ohne gesprochene Worte, um Bilder und Texturen und ihren Entsprechungen im Sound, um Techno und dessen minimaler Ansatz als Gegenpol zum Popmainstream. Gerade dieser Kontext, diese bewusste Reduktion macht Jeff Mills Veröffentlichungen bis heute so besonders und ich finde das cool, dass seitdem meine Gedanken wieder mehr um Bilder und Texturen und Techno kreisen.

Jeff Mills & Octave One: Purpose Maker Mix

Zum Wochenende gibt’s noch was – den Purpose Maker Mix von Jeff Mills, welcher 2004 auf der Exhibitionist Session einer der 4 Mixes der DVD war. Neben dem Purpose Maker Tracks, die ich immer noch gern spiele – doch jetzt irgendwo bei -6% pitche, kommt als besonderes Highlight im zweiten Video bei 5:19 der Fade zu einem kleinen Live-Intermezzo mit den Burden Brüdern aka Random Noise Generation und vielleicht noch besser bekannt als Octave One. Mensch, die hab ich auch 2006 das letzte Mal live gesehen, in der Distillery und das war doch ziemliche Klasse! Das aktuelle Album ist leider ein Schuss in den Ofen, aber nachdem ich mich erst letztes Wochenende bei Robert Hood wieder selbst überzeugt habe, dass sich eine Detroit-Session meistens lohnt, sind Octave One beim nächsten Mal in Berlin wieder fällig. Jeff Mills: Live @ Distillery Leipzig 1998

Noch einmal Groove n‘ Vibes für diese Woche. Dieses mal mit Jeff Mills, 1998 in der Distillery Leipzig. Das war damals zur besten Zeit des Klubs. Banane hatte die Macht an der Tür und an diesem Abend hatte ich ihn noch nicht ganz überzeugt, dass ich auf jeden Fall in diesen Club gehöre, dass ich mehr Techno bin, als die meisten dieser Distille-Divas von damals. Ich glaube es war ein Donnerstag und die Schlange vor dem Klub war einfach endlos. Banane ist diese Schlange dann immer entlang gegangen und hat so kleine Eintrittskärtchen verteilt, die zum Vorbeigehen an der Schlange und somit zum Einlass berechtigten. Hunderte haben keins bekommen, mich eingeschlossen und ich war selten so enttäuscht und angepisst wie damals. Ich weiß es noch ganz genau. Es war der letzte Abend, an dem mich Banane nicht rein gelassen hat…

Jeff Mills: Blue Potential live with Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra

Recorded live on July 2nd 2005 at Pont Du Gard (France) (20th anniversary of its inclusion of UNESCO’s world heritage list). Jeff Mills performed a single live outdoor concert with the Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra, at the foot of the Pont du Gard bridge in southern France, a World Heritage classified site. Symphonic versions of Jeff Mills’ greatest works were performed for the first time with the 80-piece, classical orchestra, conducted by Alain Altinoglu. Included in the concert are the full, melodic pieces “Imagine” and “The March”; the deep, classic techno piece “Gamma Player”; selections from Jeff Mills’ film compositions “Entrance To Metropolis” and “Keaton’s Theme”; the avant-garde and sublime 14-minute piece “Medium C”; and lastly the unforgettable dance floor masterpieces “The Bells” and “Sonic Destroyer”.

Jeff Mills said:

„There have always been so many questions put forth about just who we humans are and how we got here. Seemingly shipwrecked on gigantic floating rocks we call continents, humans have pondered these questions since the realisation of our own existence. The more we explore these questions, the more we must ask ourselves the single most important question: the question of ‚why?‘. Why are we here? Are we here by design or by consequence? In our busy lives, we have the few chances to occasionally look up into the blue sky. When we do, the sense of our world of blue ends when the blue fades to black (or is it really black?). There are a few of us who believe the opposite, that the human life begins just past the border of our imaginations. Whichever way you hold the truth, one thing is a commonality, we believe the answer lies beyond ourselves. So the questions persist.“

„The Blue Potential serves as just two of the many mysteries within our existence: the deep blue sky and the deep blue sea. Both vast universes of unknown answers to questions we’ve yet to realise.”
