Moritz von Oswald Trio: Vertical Ascent LP (Honest Jon’s)
The Moritz Von Oswald Trio have already made several live appearances, but this summer London’s Honest Jon’s label will release their first recorded effort, an album entitled Vertical Ascent.
The Trio (pictured above) is led by Von Oswald, easily one of the 20th century’s most important musicians – founder of Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound, Main Street and Chain Reaction with Mark Ernestus, and producer of the seminal M-series as Maurizio, Von Oswald helped revolutionise techno as well as re-activating and re-interpreting dub for a new age. Not content with being a mercurially gifted producer, Von Oswald is also a renowned mastering engineer – and it’s in this capacity that he’s enjoyed a very fruitful relationship with the Honest Jon’s label over the years, offering his mastering and restoration expertise to HJ re-issues of reggae, dub and dancehall classics by the likes of White Mice and Selah Collins, as well as hi-life and afrobeat recordings by Tony Allen amongst others. One can scarcely underestimate the fresh life that he’s brought to the vintage tracks on compilations like Watch How The People Dancing and London Is The Place For Me.
The Moritz Von Oswald Trio finds the Berlin-based chap helming an electronic, improv-based group orbiting his own synth and sampler experiments. He’s joined by Max Loderbauer (formerly of Sun Electric and now one half of minimal techno iconoclasts NSI. with Tobias Freund) on analogue synthesizers and Sasu Ripatti (better known as Vladislav Delay and Luomo) on drums and percussion. Often all-star collaborations such as these don’t really work, but from what little we’ve heard of The Moritz Von Oswald Trio, there’s a chemistry between its personnel that results in a sound that’s subtle and refined, yes, but also organic and palpably impassioned.
What FACT has heard so far is excerpts of four tracks: ‚Pattern 1‘ is a low-slung but expedient progession of clipped drums and arcing, lyrical synths, while ‚Pattern 2‘ is more abstract – Lodebauer’s work volubly to the fore. ‚Pattern 3‘ is characterised by its faintly African-inspired percussion and deep blue keyboard licks and the juddering ‚Pattern 4‘ has an almost industrial burnish to it. It’s difficult music to describe, but there’s no doubting its brain-busting quality.

The Black Dog – Further Vextations
Heute erscheint die neue Platte von The Black Dog. Wenn ich nur an dieses Album Radio Scarecrow vom letzten Jahr denke, dann ziehen sich gleich tiefe Furchen durch meine Stirn. So hatte ich doch vom Album erst erfahren, als es im LP-Format schon überall „out of stock“ war und mir bei Discogs Preise um die 60 Euro entgegen lachten. Wer hier welchen Schuss nicht gehört hat, will ich an dieser Stelle einmal offen lassen. Fakt ist: heute erscheint die neue Black Dog LP (Edit: …doch noch nicht – das Release Date ist jetzt nächste Woche Montag – 27.04.). Nachdem, was ich bereits gehört habe, ist das wieder klassischer Black Dog Style – irgendwo zwischen Ambient, IDM und Techno und insgesamt etwas dunkler als das letzte Album. Neben der wieder limitierten 3xLP Vinyl Edition gibt’s das aber auch als CD, mp3 oder flac.

Sven Weisemann – Leontica EP (Essays)
Ich weiß es zwar nicht ganz genau, aber ich tippe auf ein eigenes Labelprojekt von Sven Weisemann – Essays. Nummer 1 ist als handliche 7″ erschienen und vereint in der Plastik-Schutzhülle das Whitelabel Vinyl mit dem Kunstdruck „Treiben“ von Chen Yun Wang. Es ist aber nicht nur so, dass diese 7″ Leontica EP von innen nach außen läuft, ihr ein Kunstdruck beigelegt ist und sie somit schon fast alle optischen Besonderheiten aufweist, die ein Sammlerherz erfreuen können. Viel mehr hat hier Herr Weisemann auch mal Tracks veröffentlicht, die sich endlich ein bisschen vom bewährten Muster lösen und einen Schritt zur Seite oder -je nach Perspektive- auch einen Schritt nach vorne wagen. „Treiben“ passt dabei auch perfekt zur Musik. So erinnert mich der A-Track „Rootless“ ein wenig an wunderschöne, ältere Space Night Tracks von Elektrolux und B „Garden Of Fantasy“ bringt die Synapsen sofort auf ERP-Schwingung. Zwei Vergleiche, die ich hier jetzt einfach Mal bemühen muss, weil mir zu den Tracks auch nichts weiter einfällt – außer dass sie einfach wunderschön sind. Don’t miss!

Pixel – The Drive (Raster Noton)
Soeben habe ich mir den Wetterbericht für diese Woche angesehen. Es erwarten uns Sturm, Regen, Schnee und Minus-Temperaturen – und das nach dem wunderschönen „Hasch mich, ich bin der Frühling“ Start-OpenAir vom Sonnabend! Für die Monday Edition kommt da das neue Album auf Raster Noton (Archiv für Ton und Nicht-Ton) gerade recht. Mit sehr frei schwebenden Strukturen bringt uns Jon Egeskov aka Pixel mit The Drive einen Soundtrack zu einem imaginären Road-Movie. Er zielt mit seinen Tracks auf das Unterbewusstsein und erweckt dort die Bilder, welche dort vor sich hin schlummern. Aber Boomkat hat eigentlich schon alles sehr schön beschrieben, deshalb hier nur das Zitat und die Platte gibt’s dort ebenso als CD, flac oder mp3.
Using a basic palette of miniscule percussive elemnts and delicately manipulated amplifier hiss Egeskov instils a sense of gentle motion, sounding out dream-like engine noise that propels the listener down whatever shady lane they’re prepared to venture down. The floating hum and crinkled analogue warmth of Pixel’s sound shifts around in a subtle, noir-ish fashion, rising and falling with an implicit sense of drama. While these sounds remain vaporous throughout, drifting through the tracks seemingly without any strict organisation, needle-sharp beats puncture the mix in a finely ordered formation. At their most complex these minutiae crackle and spit like a digital fire, as best heard on ‚4‘, which deploys its beats in finely detailed, ear-pleasing rhythmic clusters. While The Drive bears all the aesthetic hallmarks of so many other entries into the Raster Noton canon there’s a sense of freedom embedded here on a structural level that’s seldom apparent in the work of Egeskov’s labelmates and peers. Highly recommended, of course…

Shitkatapult – Strike 100 Release Party
Heute gibt’s im Berghain die Release Party zur Strike 100. Herzlichen Glückwunsch an die Nachbarn von Shitkatapult! Ich erinnere mich gerne an 2002, wo ich die Strike 16 – Zartbitter EP von T.Raumschmiere gekauft habe und an diesen Typ, der mir doch tatsächlich erzählen wollte, dass Marco Haas eigentlich Tobias Raumschmiere heißt. Die Rock’nRoll-Techno Releases danach waren dann nicht mehr so mein Geschmack. Doch bei dieser 100 bin ich wieder dabei. Es ist eine Ambient-Compilation geworden. Ich hab sie bis jetzt noch nicht in Bezug auf die darauf vertretenen Artists gehört. Sie lief gestern einfach so durch – zweimal, um genau zu sein – und sie gefällt mir sehr gut. Dieses Johnny Cash Stück erinnert mich ein bisschen an KLF – Chill Out, wo Elvis im Radio kommt. Dann geht es mit spannenden Klangexperimenten weiter und weiter. Es flackern auch hin und wieder leichte Songstrukturen auf – alles sehr schön, fast völlig ohne (und wenn, dann mit einer ganz sanften) Bassdrum und das nicht nur Dienstags oder falls uns der Winter diese Woche doch noch mal für einen Augenblick einholen sollte…
Heute Abend also nun auf ein Bier mit T.Raumschmiere in Ambient Stimmung und den Live-Acts Jan Jelinek, Anders Ilar und Frank Brettschneider. Das Album gibt’s als Doppel CD und 3xVinyl.

Diese Ambient Compilation The Ambient Cookbook ist die Platte des Tages. Es ist eine wirklich schöne Zusammenstellung von Tracks, die -wie Discogs sagt- das goldene Zeitalter des Ambient repräsentierten. Na gut, goldenes Zeitalter hin oder her. Hier kannst du neben Tracks von Pete Namlook selbst auch Tracks von Tetsu Inoue, Jonah Sharp, David Moufang, Dr. Atmo und anderen hören. Die 4xCD Box ist leider wirklich teuer. Vereinzelt gibt’s aber die Tracks inzwischen schon bei Mp3-Plattformen wie emusic und das Cookbook-Booklet habe ich auch so im Netz gefunden (hier). Für heute wähle ich:
